Democratic Front leader Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba has strongly criticised the government’s Trade Order and called for the rejection of the proposed Protection of Sovereignty Bill 2026, describing both as harmful to ordinary Ugandans.
Addressing journalists at the party’s new headquarters in Lungujja, Mpuuga said the Trade Order has negatively affected traders and small business owners across the country.
“The current Trade Order is suffocating businesspeople,” he said. “Instead of supporting traders, it is making it harder for them to operate and survive.”
Mpuuga called on Parliament to intervene and ensure that policies affecting the business community are reviewed in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
At the same briefing, the Nyendo-Mukungwe MP revealed that he and like-minded legislators are mobilising opposition against the Protection of Sovereignty Bill 2026.
“We are engaging fellow Members of Parliament to reject this bill because it does not serve the interests of Ugandans,” he stated. “Laws should protect citizens, not restrict them.”
He argued that the bill, in its current form, risks undermining democratic freedoms rather than strengthening national sovereignty.
Mpuuga also used the occasion to call on government to organise long-overdue local council elections, saying grassroots leadership remains critical for effective governance.
“Local council elections must be held without further delay,” he emphasised. “Communities need legitimate leaders to address their day-to-day challenges.”
The Democratic Front says it will continue advocating for reforms that promote economic fairness and protect citizens’ rights.
